Dear AI “artist”.
The whole point of making art lies in the process of making it, not on the final result. When you want to write a book, or do a painting, or create any type of art, you sit down with the initial thought, you create your first draft, and start working from there. You explore the concept, the idea, the feeling. You dive deep into who has already create something that portrays the same thing you want to communicate — what are the things that I like about what they did? what I don’t like? what can I take as inspiration? what would I do differently? why?
And as you move on your project, the questions become introspective — how is this piece making me feel? do I want to keep it small? do I want to make something huge? why? do I want to continue with the initial idea or has something changed my perspective on the topic? what I have learnt? in which direction do I want to move now? — there are endless questions to ask yourself, that at the same time will allow you to get to know you better.
Then, when you have gotten the foundations, you let the flow and creativity to possess you — you write in the nice glossy paper with the Japanese smooth pen, you play notes on your piano hearing new sounds that gives you chills, you draw non-stop smelling the graphite of your new pencil and it feels like fuel, you paint on your brand new canvas with fresh oil paint that smoothly slips through it — your full body is involved, creating an spiritual — almost out of the body — experience, you are in heaven, without leaving earth.
And then, a piece of art has been created.
You don’t need to master any skill, because the skill gets mastered with time, with repetition, and by constantly asking yourself “what can I do different next time to improve my craft?” — and that’s growth.
So, dear AI “artist”, you are not creating art, you are giving the initial idea to a slot machine that will have you engaged with small doses of dopamine, keeping your brain wondering when you will get the reward of a decent result, so you can move on and try again, and again, and again… Agreeing with what the machine suggest is the thing that you had in mind — and that’s addiction.
Making art expands your mind, using AI atrophies it. Art will always be created by humans.
